Wait Times for Inpatient Care Drop By More Than Half Across Texas Panhandle With XFERALL

With XFERALL, the local mental health authority and hospitals serving residents of the Texas Panhandle (a 300-mile radius surrounding Amarillo), cut the average time to place a patient needing inpatient behavioral health treatment by more than half.

The XFERALL platform gave clinicians the ability not only to identify facilities with an available bed but also to match a specific patient with a facility that agrees to accept transfer based on the patient’s age, gender, language, and diagnosis.

Average placement times decreased 55 percent from 2:53:51 in 2019 to 1:18:30 in 2021. This means that fewer patients eloped from hospital EDs, experienced worsening symptoms and decompensated, and engaged in self-harm or suicide. More patients began therapeutic treatment more quickly, and strains on hospital ED staff and resources were reduced.

Inpatient Behavioral Health Median Placement Times:

2019 – 2:53:51

2020 – 2:26:20

2021 (YTD) – 1:18:30

Prior to deployment of XFERALL by the region’s acute care and behavioral health hospitals, mobile crisis teams, and local mental health authority, patients needing inpatient behavioral health treatment were waiting more than 9 hours for care.
