Each week in May, designated as Mental Health Awareness Month, XFERALL will share a new blog to raise awareness of the ongoing need for behavioral health care investment and highlight XFERALL’s work with partners to eliminate barriers to treatment and reduce delays in care.
About half of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition sometime in their life, with symptoms starting by age 24 for most people, according to Mental Health America. The average delay between symptom onset and treatment is 11 years, meaning a lot of people spend months or years facing mental health challenges before getting a diagnosis. During this time, they may cycle in and out of emergency department or jails if they experience acute crisis episodes. Connecting individuals in crisis with appropriate care – in the right place, at the right time – is critical for making sure they receive a proper diagnosis and treatment.
XFERALL works with community mental health agencies, crisis teams, school districts, EMS, law enforcement, and hospitals to better facilitate placement of individuals needing behavioral health treatment whether it’s inpatient, partial hospitalization, crisis stabilization, or outpatient services.
Solving the country’s behavioral health challenges will require long-term solutions and investments. But, for those in crisis, care can’t wait. XFERALL can be almost immediately deployed in hospitals and elsewhere to eliminate logistical and operational barriers to identifying care that is available within the system and facilitating faster placement of patients.
